What is the meaning of Scarcity?

Scarcity is a sales technique based on the threat of loss, which is often more powerful than the prospect of gaining something of equal value. Product and category pages typically imply scarcity based on number of items in stock or an offer that is running out. Some ecommerce companies have been criticised for effectively misleading the customer with scarcity (e.g. failing to end promotions after the countdown clock has hit zero).
