What is a delivery guarantee?

A delivery guarantee is a promise that an order will arrive by a specific date or time. If it doesn’t, the customer usually gets something back: a refund of the shipping cost, a voucher or, for express services, a refund of the shipping fee from the carrier.

Core principle: A delivery guarantee sells, but only make it if your stock, warehouse and carrier can keep it.

Types of delivery guarantees

Guaranteed delivery date at checkout

The shop promises a date, for example “order today, delivered by Friday”, and compensates if it misses.

Time-definite express

Express carriers sell guaranteed services, such as delivery before 9:00 or 12:00 the next day, often with a money-back guarantee if they’re late.

Marketplace delivery promises

Large marketplaces show guaranteed or fast-delivery badges. Sellers who miss them too often can lose the badge or their ranking.

What you need to offer a delivery guarantee

  • Stock in the right country and accurate stock levels
  • Same-day dispatch with reliable cut-off times
  • Carriers with strong on-time performance for each destination
  • Monitoring of late parcels and a clear compensation rule

Example: Before Christmas, a gift brand guarantees delivery by 23 December for orders placed by 20 December in Germany. Its warehouse ships every order the same day, and the brand refunds shipping for the few that arrive late.

What is a delivery guarantee?

A promise that an order arrives by a certain date or time, often with compensation if it doesn’t.

What does “guaranteed delivery” mean?

The seller or carrier commits to a delivery date or time and usually refunds the shipping fee or offers compensation if it misses.

Is a delivery guarantee legally required?

No. But once a shop promises a delivery date, EU rules let customers cancel if it isn’t met, and the promise must be honoured.
